lyrics

Back when my father drove a pickup made in '72
and acting normal was all a child my age knew how to do
tossed me up in the truck with a sandwich or two
said we're going out to the country

see a real estate man just come passing through our town
selling desert land little south eastern bound
when that man come selling my pop got a look in his eye
a dreaming man does from time to time

riding down the road with the radio on
he could always whistle like a song
wind blowing through our hair and the road rolling
through country make a grown man feel tiny

when that engine quit I startled from my sleep
heard my father mutter something about the healing smell of mesquite
how a man needs a place to go every once in a while
get away from his daily problems

shuffled around a bit walking that land
father and son all pockets and hands
the sky slowly put on her evening gown
I was thinking about supper

that night turned to weeks turned to months turned into years
old man still looks to the future
says he wants to build a bottle house out on that land
says when the sun strikes it right it will fill that house with color
